My Dear Sir:-
I have been away for a short holiday, hence your letter of the 3rd instant was not replied to by return of post.
I regret that my firm's letter of the 30th ulto to the Under Secretary of State is somewhat confusing.
There are three forms of permanent way construction in Hong Kong, viz:- double line with centre poles, double line with side poles and single line with the usual passing places.
In the first case the distance between the inner rails is 6' 5". In the second 3' 11", and in the third at the passing places the distance between the inner rails is the same as in the second instance.
To illustrate the different forms of construction I have had a small progress diagram coloured. I send you herewith.
As many members of my staff are still on holiday, I am sorry that I cannot in the time have a more explicit drawing prepared.
The total route length of the tramway is 16,242 yards of which 7,786 yards will be constructed as double line with centre poles.
I have pleasure in enclosing you herewith copies of diagrams as sent with my firm's letter of the 25th April last.
